Johns Island
Once a thriving farm community, John’s Island offers acres of lush, undeveloped land made available only recently to those moving into the area. There are still many local farms in operation; these farms provide much of the food for Charleston’s “eat local” movement. Often, these farms sell local produce at stands located along the island’s main roads.
While the island is still agricultural in appearance, new developments are continually cropping up all over the island. Many of the developments include picturesque waterfront lots that overlook the Wadmalaw Sound and the Kiawah and Stono Rivers.
The Villages in St. John’s Woods are a community of single-family homes located just off Maybank Highway, between River and Bohicket Roads. Only a short drive from Kiawah and Seabrook Islands, this neighborhood includes a six-acre Central Park, landscaped pool, well-equipped playground, and walking trails. This subdivision is devoted to energy efficiency; all houses have the ability to use energy from the sun and therefore save residents money on their monthly electric bill.
Cottage Plantation, located down the street from Kiawah Island, is one of many new neighborhoods growing along Bohicket Creek on John’s Island. Cottage Plantation and its sibling neighborhoods feature new houses and often share a dock where residents can access the creek at high tide.
John’s Island is home to several private schools, such as Charleston Collegiate School and The Montessori School.
Aside from the newly developed neighborhoods and stretches of farmland, the main attraction on John’s Island is the Angel Oak, a live oak tree towering 65 feet high, 25.5 feet wide, and giving 17,000 square feet of shade to the surrounding area. The tree is estimated to be approximately 1,500 years old.
